FO disillusionment

The last three tops I have knitted just don’t fit me properly. Now, I accept that the Purple Jumper was an experiment. Even though I can now (just about) fit it over my head, I can see that two inches of ease is too much. Also, I have a suspicion I may have lost some weight since I first started knitting it, which isn’t going to help. The yoke is too wide and too long. I don’t think the fact that my sleeves were not proportional to the body helped anything, and I put that towards part of the reason the yoke turned out wonky. Have a look.

And this is the dratted neck.

It’s still a bit too small. I think I’ll leave this for a few months and then just rip it up to knit something better.

But even though the PJ was an experiment, my Lucky wrap and Olympic Knitting Project were not experiments and right now, they are completely unwearable. Infuriatingly, they both have the same problem. They fit me fine in the arms and around, but the neck is just enormous. Literally. Falling off my shoulders enormous. At first, I thought it was something to do with my gauge. But after doing a google blog search about it, I actually think it’s the way I did the finishing border on both.

In the case of Lucky, thanks to Winnie’s blog, I realised that I wasn’t gathering the front enough. The first time I seamed it, it wouldn’t stay on me at all, it was so boat-necked. The second time I seamed it, the shoulders were all puckered and horrible. I seamed it again last night and I’m back to being boat-neck neels. Winnie recommends doing a little gathering, so I guess this is just a case of trial and error.

In the case of my Olympic Knitting Project – the pink lace bolero – my crochet border doesn’t gather enough around the neck either. This literally slides off my shoulders. Infuritating! So last night, I had a complete knitting crisis and said I would never knit again, or even wear clothes again, because nothing ever fits me properly. But now I realise that I just have to wait until I can afford some sort of person who will buy clothes that fit me because the depressing truth is that I am 24 and I still don’t know how to dress myself.

In more uplifting news, the Hugh Lane Gallery reopened yesterday. This gallery is only a 10 minute bus journey from my house. They’ve been closed for the last year and a half because they were expanding. I’m very fond of this gallery and I look forward to spending a good afternoon in there next week.

  1. Bummer about the Fos :( Let’s face it, knitting is a learning process for even the most experienced, and patterns are sometimes a little fudged. Look at all the mistakes and problems with fitting with Rowan and Debbie Bliss patterns, and they are the pros! And DB is notorious for doing poor fitting patterns, or hiding problems in the model poses. Sooo, you’ve done pretty well really :D Keep at it, and you’ll find what fits/suits you eventually…

That gallery looks very very cool. I wish DB had a gallery/museum kind of mind, but no. Poo.
